Since the millennium, more than 3,000 women have been brutally killed in Guatemala – each year this number increases dramatically. Fewer than 2% of these murders have resulted in prosecution.
Referred to as feminicide, these gender-specific acts of violence committed by men against women indicates state responsibility whether through the direct commission of the actual killing, toleration of the perpetrators’ acts of violence, or the omission of state responsibility to ensure the safety of its female citizens.
In August 2009, a human rights delegation will convene in Guatemala to investigate the causes, consequences, and costs of violence against women in Guatemala. A group from Richmond, Virginia will be traveling to Guatemala to participate in this delegation.
A wine and cheese event was held at the Historic Ann Carrington House in Church Hill to raise funds to support a scholarship for two students to participate in this delegation.
