“In May 2007, a mother of two small children left her house in Guatemala city to look for work. She never returned home. The woman’s mother, at home watching her grandchildren, frantically called her daughter’s cell phone. Finally, someone answered. An unidentified man said, “You can find your daughter at the morgue.”

For a detailed description of the acts of violence against women, you can download the Guatemalan Human Rights Commission Report

How can you help?

A group of women in the Richmond community organized a wine and cheese fundraiser to support a human rights delegation to investigate the causes, consequences, and costs of violence against women in Guatemala. That delegation, officially traveled with the Guatemala Human Rights Commission, then returned to the US to develop a report and each individual delegate made a commitment to engage in a violence prevention activity. These activities include awareness raising with the media, lobbying our political leaders who make critical foreign aid decisions, and other targets determined to be appropriate for change.

In a women-helping-women approach, we developed a wine and cheese fundraiser to support at least one scholarship for a young woman leader to participate in this delegation. We met that challenge by fundraising just over $1,000!  Abida Dini of Richmond, Virginia received the first scholarship!

Our Fundraising Event

We held our first event in May! We generated enough to fully fund one participant!

Thanks to all!

More than 3,000 women have been brutally killed in Guatemala since the Millennium and fewer than 2% have resulted in prosecution.
